BRUCKNER, SCHUBERT, BEETHOVEN
Saturday 5 April, 2008 at 8pm
Melbourne University Choral Society
Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir
Akademisches Orchester der Universität Stuttgart
Conducted by Andrew Wailes and Veronika Stoertzenbach
Bruckner's powerful and highly dramatic setting of the Te Deum (the great Christian hymn of praise and thanksgiving) received its first performance in Vienna in 1885, and since that time has remained a favourite setting of the text. At the time of his death, Bruckner considered it to be his finest work. Schubert's Missa Solemnis in A flat dates form 1822, and is not only considered to be the composer's best, but one of the finest settings of the Mass ever composed. Full of contrasts and moments of divine inspiration, the work also contains moments of extraordinary musical effect, and profound mysticism. Beethoven's Seventh Symphony in A major Op.92 dates from 1812 and has thrilled audiences with its fiery rhythmic nature ever since.
Special guests the Akademisches Orchester der Universität Stuttgart will accompany the Melbourne University Choral Society and the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir conducted by Veronika Stoertzenbach and Andrew Wailes at 8pm on April 5th, St Mary's Star of the Sea, corner of Victoria St and Howard St, West Melbourne.
