MAY AND JUNE CONCERTS
Further details TBA
A spectacular symphonic concert featuring Orff's throbbing masterpiece, Carmina Burana, a thrilling setting of ancient Latin, German and French texts that describe the fortunes of Medieval life, from love and lust, to drinking and gambling. Also being performed is one of Australia's greatest choral works - the spic Choral Symphony No. 6 by Carl Vine - a pantheon of the human condition: an account of creation followed by our relationship to the prime deities of the cosmos. Enuma Elish is a creation myth describing the creation of the world from primeval chaos. Although generally described as 'Sumerian' or 'Babylonian' and possibly originating before 2000 BC, this version of the myth is taken from a cuneiform tablet in Semitic Akkadian of Northern Babylonia, 1300-1250 BC. The remaining three texts are Eis Gên, Eis Selênên, and Eis Hêlion - hymns to the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
Featuring the combined forces of several choirs, a massive orchestra, and several of Australia's finest soloists under the baton of Andrew Wailes.

MUCS is excited to be performing John Rutter's "Requiem", composed in 1985. It does not adhere strictly to the conventional Ordinary Mass according to Catholic liturgy, but combines texts from the Requiem Mass and the 1662 Burial Sentences from the English Book of Common Prayer. A very personal and emotionally-charged piece, it bears the dedication “in memoriam L. F. R.”, and is dedicated to John Rutter’s father, who had died the previous year.
It is scored for soprano, mixed choir and chamber ensemble or orchestra. The work also includes Rutter’s superb setting of the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is My Shepherd”, notable for its plaintive oboe solo, delicate orchestration and sensitivity to the text. Since the work’s first performance in 1985 it has become a firm favourite with choirs and audiences the world over.
