Rutter Requiem

Missa Festiva and Five Days that changed the World

Missa Festiva and Five Days that changed the World

Sunday 14 August, 2022 at 3pm and 7pm

  Deakin Edge,  Federation Square

MUCS is excited to be performing John Rutter's "Requiem", composed in 1985.  It does not adhere strictly to the conventional Ordinary Mass according to Catholic liturgy, but combines texts from the Requiem Mass and the 1662 Burial Sentences from the English Book of Common Prayer. A very personal and emotionally-charged piece, it bears the dedication “in memoriam L. F. R.”,  and is dedicated to John Rutter’s father, who had died the previous year.

It is scored for soprano, mixed choir and chamber ensemble or orchestra.  The work also includes Rutter’s superb setting of the 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is My Shepherd”, notable for its plaintive oboe solo, delicate orchestration and sensitivity to the text.  Since the work’s first performance in 1985 it has become a firm favourite with choirs and audiences the world over.

Saturday 3 September, 2022  at 2pm

  Collins Streert Baptist Church

MUCS is currently preparing an exciting program of vibrant 21st century works, headlined by English composer Bob Chilcott's setting of a new text by Charles Bennett, "Five Days the Changed the World". The work takes singers on a journey through five historical events:  the invention of printing, the abolition of slavery, the first powered  flight, the discovery of penicillin, and the first man in space.  In each movement, music and words come together to create a strikingly  vivid and personal account of each protagonist's experience, from the  printer seeing 'each letter like a person' to the astronaut commenting on the beauty of our planet from space.  American John Levitt's dynamic "Missa Festiva" is complemented by a number of shorter masterpieces, both old and new.
